IAXCANADA Global Operations is thrilled to announce a new and ambitious project: constructing an Olympic-sized ice rink in Frohnleiten, Austria. This significant development is part of a broader upgrade to an existing facility, which currently hosts outdoor swimming pools, a water park, and a seasonal outdoor ice rink. With this enhancement, Frohnleiten will soon boast a world-class, year-round indoor ice rink that meets Olympic standards. The new facility will elevate the local sports infrastructure and support both recreational and competitive ice sports. One of the key upgrades involves transforming the outdoor seasonal rink floor. Currently, the rink operates with a temporary surface, which can pose challenges during the winter months. By installing a permanent concrete floor, IAXCANADA Global Operations ensures improved ice quality and operational efficiencies during colder seasons. This change will not only enhance the outdoor rink’s performance but also reduce maintenance requirements, ultimately increasing the venue’s operational reliability. Indoors, the new Olympic rink will feature cutting-edge technology, marking it as one of the most advanced ice rinks in the region. Designed to minimise operational costs and extend equipment longevity, the rink will leverage the latest innovations in rink management technology. One of the standout features is the Intelligent Rink Energy Management System (IREMS). This open, web-based platform allows assigned personnel to monitor and control the rink’s systems remotely from anywhere in the world. This innovative system ensures that the rink operates at peak efficiency, with load shedding and shifting capabilities to optimise energy consumption during peak electrical periods. The system can adjust operational sequences to reduce power consumption when necessary, utilising Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) on motor loads to minimise energy use when conditions don’t require full capacity.

Another significant advantage of the new facility is its centralised refrigeration system, which allows for more efficient temperature and humidity control. Unlike traditional systems that rely on costly and bulky desiccant dehumidifiers and air conditioning units, this centralised system is designed to maintain optimal ice conditions without excessive energy consumption. The system’s design also includes full heat reclamation, with the building’s heating requirements being supplied from the same centralised refrigeration system. This integration of heating and cooling operations will contribute to a more sustainable facility. The ice rink will utilize a low-charge flooded ammonia system, featuring Mycom reciprocating compressors, Danfoss valves and controls, and Vahterus heat exchangers. Guest Automation will be responsible for integrating the ice plant with other building operations, such as CCTV, security, and administrative systems, ensuring seamless coordination between all aspects of the facility. This project represents a major leap forward for Frohnleiten’s sports infrastructure. IAXCANADA Global Operations is proud to lead the development of this state-of-the-art facility, which will serve local communities and position Frohnleiten as a destination for ice sports in Austria. The combination of modern technology, energy efficiency, and world-class design ensures that this rink will provide an exceptional experience for athletes and visitors for years to come.
